Circa 1908, Indianapolis police department chief in/ on an early police car. Any guesses? I have no idea.

Cole runabout ? I would hazard a guess that it would have been one of the several car companies out of Indianapolis at the time.

I have a suspicion this an Autocar or Franklin (I find varying captions, both used the coal scuttle hood) :

Thanks, the Autocar in particular looks very promising.

I suspect you’re right.

Looks like the car in the picture has four louvers on the hood instead of three most manufacturers (including Autocar) seem to have used.

There were several coal scuttle hooded cars mentioned in this PreWarCar.com article and none of them seemed to match this one. Except the Rayfield of which I couldn’t find a proper picture. It was also local to Indiana according to Chuck’s Toyland .

The photo from fintail looks like it has 4 louvers but hard to be certain.

Oh you’re right. I didn’t notice that at first.
